Haneef’s relative granted tourist visa
A relative of accused terrorism supporter Mohamed Haneef has been granted a tourist visa to enter Australia, Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews says.
Mr Andrews said on Friday the immigration department had approved a subclass 676 tourist visa to Imran Siddiqui, allowing him to travel to Australia to provide support to Haneef - his cousin - and meet with his lawyers.
‘In assessing Mr Siddiqui’s application, character and security assessments have been undertaken by relevant Australian government agencies,’ Mr Andrews said in a statement.
Earlier on Friday, the minister refused to review his decision on Monday to cancel Haneef’s work visa after the Gold Coast-based doctor was granted bail on a charge of providing support to terrorism.
Haneef is being held in custody in Brisbane.
