Applicants and Visa Holders: Classifying Skills
Occupational Classification:
Pre migration and Australian visa applicants (and, in certain cases, visa holders) are occupationally classified for purposes relating to:
- assessing eligibility for the visa applied for
- monitoring immigration programs and/or
- statistical analysis of all persons entering Australia
Most permanent visa applicants are occupationally classified as part of the process of considering their application.
(This therefore includes all family unit members who are visa applicants.) Certain temporary visa applicants are also occupationally classified as part of the process of considering their application. (Where appropriate, occupational classification is also undertaken in respect of temporary visa sponsorships or nominations.)
Applicants are occupationally classified whether or not they are in the workforce.
In practice, a Government immigration officer only has to classify those applicants when the input of an ASCO-ANZSCO code is necessary. Other visa holders (including visitors) are occupationally classified (for statistical purposes) applying information obtained from their Incoming passenger card.
This relates to all persons applying for any Australian visa.
Occupation Classification, Not a Skills Assessment
No skills assessment is carried out of an applicants educational and / or qualification base.
Rather, occupational classification is a separate process from the skills assessment that is undertaken by certain visa applicants, such as, applicants for the Skilled - Australian-sponsored and Skilled - Independent visa classes.
Yet, in practice, the ASCO-ANZSCO code assigned to such applicants often is also their occupational classification for visa migration purposes.
