Is Visa 416 Appropriate?

The 416 visa is primarily a cultural visa; it is not for people seeking to undertake normal work, training or study. There are other visas for these activities. Therefore:

• If study is the primary purpose of stay (or as otherwise indicated in Approved Special Programs), it may be more appropriate for a person to apply for a Student visa
• If practical training in a field related to study/skills is the main purpose of stay, the Occupational Trainee visa may be more appropriate
• If work is the primary purpose of stay, a visa that allows work (eg the Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa (subclass 457)) may be more appropriate
• Special Programs may be approved for internships, where these relate to the applicant's area of study, and the program is reciprocal (although these may also meet criteria for an Occupational Trainee subclass 442 visa)
