ASCO-ANZSCO - Visa Occupations and Problems: How to Classify a Skilled Occupation

Skilled Migration to Australia and ASCO-ANZSCO

To establish if an occupation exists for migration purposes

  • Occupational classification of most applicants (whether or not in the workforce) is established from answers to questions given on occupation and proposed duties in the relevant Visa application, sponsorship or nomination form (as applicable), pre-skill decision notices, and material submitted
  • In assigning or determining ASCO-ANZSCO coding, immigration officers are not bound by the occupation that is claimed by the applicant

For permanent visa applicants, an immigration officer is expected, and should, carefully assess the information given by an applicant as to their occupation and the actual duties performed, then reconcile this information with details of work experience supplied; such as in employer statements and work verifications. An immigration officer however can amend the claimed occupation.

Difficulties in Selecting the ASCO-ANZSCO code

When assigning an ASCO-ANZSCO code difficulties can arise due to an applicant having given, for example:

  • an inappropriate selected occupational title
  • insufficient information on the duties performed
  • disparate detail on level of education, qualifications and employment history

In these circumstances, immigration officers generally investigate further to ascertain the most appropriate ASCO-ANZSCO code. Further investigations may involve requesting more information from the applicant (and may include an interview) or obtaining information about the education and employment structure in the home country or having field officers attend the applicants current and former workplace.
